Hungary in Colour

The exhibition presents a remarkable collection never before seen in Hungary, recently discovered by researchers. The focal point of the exhibition is a series of photographs showcasing traditional Hungarian folk attire from various regions and settlements, originally displayed at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. Thought to have been lost, the photographs by János Tiedge have been loaned from the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. continue

Permanent exhibition
István Dobó Museum, Eger

Gunpowder smoke among the stones of the fortress...

The outer and inner castle system was developed in the 1540s. The passage between them was the Dark Gate which is still visible today. The outer castle was destroyed in 1702, but the gate continued to be used and was only walled up at the beginning of the 19th century. continue

One of the most spectacular and the most valuable unit of the museum’s permanent exhibition is the ecclesiological exhibition on the first floor. Mr. Béla Béres, a priest from Tokaj offered his 800 pieces collection to his favourite town’s museum in 1981. continue
Victor Vasarely AMBIGU-B 1970, paper, tempera
Victor Vasarely (1908-1997) left Hungary for France in 1930. In the 60's he gave quite a number of his works to his birthplace. In the exhibition one can take delight in pieces of op art, decorative textiles, variations of the renowned' Zebra, and geometrical, structural genres. continue
Easter branch collecting in the Open-Air Museum
Visitors can sense the athmosphere of the original villages, as they walk up and down the streets and among the workshops, buildings and yards. Visitors can learn about crafts rare or completely forgotten by today. Traditional feasts, habits and foods of the village society are also represented. continue
Museum entrance
The building called the 'Iron Log House' is one of the nicest buildings in Győr. It hosts the Patkó Imre collection of the Xantus János Museum. The house belonged to the chapter of Győr until the end of the 16th century. In 1833, the tradesman Zittrich Mátyás bought it. He put out an iron log under the balcony as the sign similar to those in Vienna. continue
A taste of the exhibition
The railroad lamp collection of Haragovics József is shown in Fertőszéplak in a porched peasant house built at the beginning of the 19th century. This is the only one of the kind in Middle Europe. The visitors may learn of the giant changes that took place from the beginning until nowadays in railway transport. The thoroughly fashioned lamps were used in 21 countries. The 246 pieces shown characterize the railways of many countries including Holland, the USA, Mongolia, etc. The lamps from Hungary are unique too. continue
Croatian costumes
In the 18th and 19'h centuries the peasants and craftspeople of Baranya created their own unique tools and vessels. Their popular art reflects the wonderful talent of different groups of several tongues and religions. Baranya County is home to several minorities: ten ethnographic groups of Hungarians; Germans; Croatians; Serbs and Gypsies. continue
The museum building
The noteworthy building of the city of Győr, the Hungarian Ispita gives home to the permanent exhibition arranged of the private collection of professor Péter Váczy. The building used to function as the home of aged and lonely citizens of the town. Its operation was supported by the foundation of bishop György Széchenyi (founded in 1666) until the first world war. continue
The János Tornyai Museum was founded in 1905. Its ethnographic collection was based on the objects collected by Lajos Kiss with the instructions of János Tornyai for the Industrial and Agricultural exhibition of 1904. The institution extended by a department of archeology in 1930. The basis of the collection of fine arts is the almost five hundred pictures of the painter János Tornyai. continue
