Hungary in Colour

The exhibition presents a remarkable collection never before seen in Hungary, recently discovered by researchers. The focal point of the exhibition is a series of photographs showcasing traditional Hungarian folk attire from various regions and settlements, originally displayed at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. Thought to have been lost, the photographs by János Tiedge have been loaned from the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. continue

Gunpowder smoke among the stones of the fortress...

The outer and inner castle system was developed in the 1540s. The passage between them was the Dark Gate which is still visible today. The outer castle was destroyed in 1702, but the gate continued to be used and was only walled up at the beginning of the 19th century. continue

Tokaj Museum, Tokaj

Ecclesiological Exhibition

One of the most spectacular and the most valuable unit of the museum’s permanent exhibition is the ecclesiological exhibition on the first floor. Mr. Béla Béres, a priest from Tokaj offered his 800 pieces collection to his favourite town’s museum in 1981. continue
Traffic started on the railway line connecting Budapest and Hatvan in the spring of 1867. The Hungarian state gifted Francis Joseph and queen Elizabeth with the castle and demesne of Gödöllő on the occasion of their coronation in the same year and from that time on, the royal couple and their retinue would regularly travel by train to Gödöllő. In order for the king to be able to travel by train from Vienna directly to Budapest, they connected two lines in the vicinity of Kőbánya station creating the royal track called like this even today. continue
Our institute was formed as the National Theatre History Museum in 2nd November 1952. The museum moved to its present residence (District I, 57 Krisztina körút, District I), the Áldássy-mansion. The first permanent exhibition opened in the same year. continue
Porcelain from Meissen, 1860.
In the 1960's Ferenc Bours organized a 'Wine Museum' of his own collection of bottled drinks. He became interested in lamps while searching for the proper lighting of the museum. He became so much interested in the beautiful pieces that without noticing it he started to collect them. He bought the objects displayed with his own money with a few exception. There were days when he purchased 20-25 of them. Most of the objects were dirty and rusty, some even lacking parts. Thus after learning the trade of restoration he repaired them all. Presently there are 1000-1100 pieces are displayed in the sole Lamp Museum of the country. The institution was even listed in the Guinness Records. continue
The museum building
The National Metallurgy Museum is operated by the National Polytechnic Museum Institution in the Szinva Valley in the Bükk Hills. The institution is located in an old industrial building with long history. The objective of the museum is to introduce the past of metallurgy, to save objects and documents related to an industry that played such an important part in the development of human civilization. continue
The Kossuth ship is found near the Chain Bridge on Pest side
The almost 100-year-old Kossuth steamboat is of outstanding value in itself being the only paddle steamer which survived in its original form in Hungary. On the boat an exhibition of interesting navigation relics awaits the visitors. The vessel's fully preserved steam engine and paddle are displayed together with is steam powered "steering wheel". continue
The museum building
The Straw Hat Museum of Kőrispatak opened on 21 July 2001. The idea of opening a museum showing straw hats came to a master straw hat maker whose family had been involved in this profession for three generations. Among others, the Straw Hat Museum organizes straw weaver and straw hat making camps. continue
The museum and the porcelain factory
Those who visit Herend as a porcelain enthusias, will see from afar off the late classicist building of the porcelain museum. The first porcelains of Herend were born among these walls. In the 1840'ies it was rebuilt on several occasions, but the original building has not changed too much over the years. continue
