A soproni Várostorony - lábánál a múzeum bejáratával
The symbol of Sopron is the Tűztorony (Fire Tower) Its bottom part was built upon Roman wall remains. From the 13th century it served as a gate tower of the town walls. It gained its present form (the baroque round balcony and its cap) after the town fire of 1976. Watchmen of the Tűztorony had a very important task: to watch the area and indicate possible fires by a lamp or by colourful flags. They also gave signals when strange soldiers or wine transporters were coming toward the town. They had to play some musical instruments, too, for at weddings, burrials or town celabrations they had to provide the music. continue
The museum is found in the factory compound
Unfortunately the fundamental goals of the museum (that is to save all valuable documents, photos, instruments and objects) could not have been entirely accomplished. However, we still managed to save and keep 2100 appliances and objects, 10000 photographs and 500 documents, and through this establish a special and complex electronic museum of precision-mechanics, which goes without parallel in the country. continue
Inside the museum
The pharmacy was founded by the Jesuits in the 1713 whe Bishop István Telekessy donated a house belonging to the order for that purpose. It moved to its present site in 1900 where it functioned as a pharmacy until 1968. The museum was opened in 1987 and fitted out with restored furnishings. The furniture, made of oak with baroque rococo detailing, was purpose-built for the original Jesuit pharmacy in 1745-46. continue
