Péter Kern is an amateur cacti collector. He attended primary school in Leipzig. However, to learn Hungarian, he enrolled secondary school in Esztergom. He began to collect cacti due to his love for nature and the incitement of his wife. The man, who was originally an architect-mycologist, became an acclaimed cacti specialist soon. His collection of almost 10.000 pieces is located in Érd.
He was the first to open a cacti collector study group in Hungary in 1964 at the Csili Cultural Centre. In 1971 he managed to establish the National Society of Hungarian Cacti Collectors of which he became the president. He was also member of the Switzerland bases IOS.
He did field trips to Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland and East Germany, as well as Latin America. He travelled to Mexico, the Mecca of cacti collectors, six times.
Our exhibition reviews the oeuvre of the cacti collector Péter Kern via books, objects and photos.
