Zsuzsa Péreli did not just go to the flee-market to find collectible objects but also visited a number of villages where she searched attics of a number of houses. Old objects and photos inspired her works, comforted her and, of course, gave her strength to work.
Attic history: it is not only the title of a graphic work but also the approach that Péreli represents. Our personal and universal history, in addition to our traditions inspired her, made her ponder and made her work. An old photo or a person on a postcard, may it be a soldier, a peasant woman, a town dweller or a famous actress, a hundred-year-old peasant house or a figure of history: These did not simply mean: model for the artist. He will be the chosen one, she will pass on all that have turned yellow, about faces on photos, the layers of trees, whatever is mystified of the ecstasy of a historic moment. She sends messages to people of our present.
The works reveal the sensible artist in search of answers. The (Three Siblings, In Memoriam a Saints' Day in Kercaszomor, Greetings from Felsőszenterzsébet) evoke the past, lifestyles, ways to understand life or the perishing o fan old peasant house. One of the most decisive work is 'Hymn' from 1996. it evokes the eternal question: what is the meaning of life as 'it has to have a superior meaning and perspective.'
Zsuzse Péreli 'waved' both faces of life: the one that grew old in work and the innocent face of a child. This method of portrayal that characterise pictures in textile art and made of thread is the art of versatility, systematic work, utilization of multi colours and material. Carpet art is one of the most important genders but it is not guided by improvisation or effective gestures. The process of work is also pretty time consuming. As the art historian János Frank puts it: Zsuzsa Péreli is the synonym for tapestry. On the other hand, for Péreli it is not only the tapestry, as she works with various other genders, too.
The exhibition 'Attic History' is located in one of the compelling buildings, in the Skanzen in Szentendre.
