Dezső Orbán has made a long journey until a life-work exhibition of nearly 100 pieces of works has been organised in his native town Győr thanks to the MKB Bank. He joined the secondary grammar school with Lajos Gulácsy in Pest. He used to paint at home as a secondary school boy, but being a civil servant's son he chose a decent civil profession. While he studied Physics and Mathematics at university, once he made a bold decision and sent one of his paintings to the Art Gallery. To his surprise the jury accepted it . He was even called "painter" in the reply letter. Next year (1906) he already lived in Paris, the pulsating centre of the modern fine arts. He joined the popular Julian academy for a short while. Then Róbert Berény, who was exhibited together with the wilds of Matisse took him under his wings. In this circle he met the young Picasso and so he got into the Salon of avantgarde paintings of the extravagant American millionaire Gertrude Stein. He finally commited himself after a long crisis to the modern tendencies.
Lonely Tree
Back home he joined the first Hungarian avantgarde group, the Eights. He exhibited in all its exhibitions, and the group itself was even formed officially in his atelier. Being himself also an artist close to the reality he learnt the firm, constructional compositions by watching Cézanne. These compositions made his still lives unmoveable even if the cup almost falls down from the table painted neglecting the perspective and the fruits formed of massive paint stains roll almost all over the table. Like a contemporary critic said:" tidiness, peace, clarity, balance as a basic feeling of his art at first sight. A peaceful and joyful world."
