Major János was born on 8 May 1934 in Budapest. His experiments also involve this area, the suburbs of the 8th district. In an interview of 1997 with him he talked about the importance of him learning of the works of Derkovits Gyula and Dési Huber István, later that of Jakovits József and Vajda Lajos. He also mentioned the works of Max Ernst and the urging and technical knowledge of Kondor Béla.
A taste of the exhibition
First he attended the arts classes of Jaschik Álmos, later, after finishing grammar school he enrolled the Collage of Fine Arts in 1952. He attended the class of Bán Béla. Bán was fired, and soon afterwards all his students as well. Major János then worked in the Orion factory where he painted portraits of women at work and made several studies of working class families. His experiences in this factory still appeared years later in his works, of course with the grotesque so typical of him. At the end, Koffán Károly helped him to get beck to collage in 1956 which he finished it in 1959.

He is most interested in acquiring varied graphic techniques and their application at the same time. The traditional ways of making presses and the new methods to tend surfaces resulted in pages with varied factors. They show no trace of excepted topics but show the everyday life with infinite pessimism and sarcasm. Major's sole shelter is the thorough execution, the nice work. He won several international prizes. While he was an introvert figure he still participated at the movements of his contemporaries who called themselves the 'Industrial Design Generation'. He also became an inescapable figure of the Hungarian neoavantgarde.

In the middle of the 1960's he found the problem of coincidence and it became the 'motivation and execution of most of his pictures' (Körner Éva). The absurdity of these pictures comes from the classic space distances according to which in the representation such constellations may occur that may lead to serious misunderstanding when processed visually.

At our exhibition, we show problems concentrating on this setback. Some show figures, some solids. We focus on one series that is rare since Major János destroyed most of his works. The drawing made in the 60's is the result of several remakes. Of course, we cannot exempt the works related to the ‘concept' works, the chess problems.
