The handkerchiefs of the vernacular and the civic society present in our collection are form the last third of the 19th century. The earliest piece was made in Tiszaörs in 1882. It was owned by Erzsike Szakács.
The embroidery and the lace of the handkerchiefs are on varied material: on textile, batiste, silk, and pure silk. In the corners there were little flowers or the first name of women sewed in. In the corner of some of the white embroidery the thread may be stretched. Their edge was usually trimmed by ornamented holes, hem-stitch, and lace- or crocheted lace. One of the clover shaped pieces is trimmed by grape motif.
The blue velvet handkerchief holder embroidered by wine-red is a rarity. It was made in 1898 to keep the ceremonial handkerchiefs in it. These pieces were only used at celebrations or on Sundays when they were kept in the book of prayers as a bookmark.
