The Tiszafüred region has always been famous for its wicker matting and home industries. The Tisza floodplains were abundant in the necessary raw materials, so the last 200 years a lot of people were involved in this craft. such were e.g. the mats maker Tibor Kovács from Mezőtárkány, who is currently engaged in making baskets, containers and other consumer goods. The exhibition offers a little overview of these works .
Tibor Kovács says about himself:
I live in the small village of Mezőtárkány, in Heves County. I first got involved in making folk items in the '70s . For about 20 years, I was making fishing nets and was researching the history of fishing. Later I learned abut basket and lace making.
I learned to bond rushes from the master János Hánis of Orosháza. Currently, my daily activities include working with rushes and sedge as well as lace-making. My works have been featured in several national and international collective and solo exhibitions. I teach and give lectures. I research the common traits in Slovak and Hungarian lace art. Ever since the death of my tutor, I have carried on rushes bonding alone.
He makes traditional forms of rushes:
•egg tray
•doormat
•containers
•Breadbaskets
•trays
He also makes bed of rushes and sedge He makes various chairs of sedge. He also makes reed brooms and toys of rushes, using wide and narrow-leaf brushes as well.
