He received his diploma from the Naval Engineer Department of the Polytechnic University of Budapest in 1956. In 1959, he studied at the Window Dresser and Decorator School; from 1965 to 1967, he was the student of the École des Beaux Arts of Paris. His spiritual masters were Marczell György and Hamvas Béla.
He is a member of the Association of Hungarian Painters and the Szinyei Merse Pál Association. In 1991, he received the Oeuvre Prize; in 1992, he won the prize of the Summer Exhibition of Szeged and the Munkácsy Prize. In the 50-60's as one of the young artists who surrounded Hamvas Béla involved in avant-garde, he was walking his own path despite the political constraints. His aim was to create a universal picture by disposing of emotions gradually and turning towards philosophical-metaphysical values.
At the beginning of the 60's, he formed a unique relief style and works from 1965 strictly on square forms on strict structure. His stay in Paris and acquainting himself with the Hungarian folk material of the Musée de l'Homme made him loose. The rich material lead Halmy to the moral understanding and power that he tried to express with his works that were related to universal, Hungarian and local values. The compositions built up of plastic layers involve painting and sculpturing at the same time emphasizing light as an absolute value.
One characteristics of his attitude as an artist is that he did not only strive to synthesize the ancient and universal forms but also to renew them. His masters were Marczell György, Hamvas Béla.
