The Colony of Artists of Écska was founded in 1956. It was a temporary home for artists, a meeting point when changes occurred in the social and political life of the country. These resulted in new ars poetics and effected the development of artists. Most of the important artists of the time participated in the work of the colony. They used different techniques such as painting, sculpturing, graphics etc; however, in the 80's the emphasis was moved on the aquarelle.

The Contemporary Gallery of Zrenjanin includes eighty aquarelles made from the fifties of the 20th century to nowadays from artists from every province of ex Yugoslavia. The biggest unit of the collection was created through the last three decades. The audience may take a peep inside the almost complete yield of the creative work of the country.
The aquarelle technique slowly became equal with the others of fine art. The artists who experimented with this technique show that it is possible to create new forms and worth to take adventures on this field.
The notes of the land of Écska and its surroundings are a large part of the exhibition.
Some artists combine aquarelle with other techniques of fine art like pencil, acryl etc. Others only work with aquarelle and are in search of its boundaries and possibilities, sometimes making it the opposite of itself, its gouache.
