School theatre was flourishing in town in the 16-17th century. In 1707 Rákóczi Ferenc II went to see the Jesuits when visiting the town. He saw a play of the life of the king Mathias Rex and he spent more then three hours there.
Caricature
In the first theatre building opened in 1789 German theatre companies played for two decades. The opening of the first official Hungarian Theatre in the 19th century and the theatre companies playing in Miskolc are closely related. From 1816 the theatre companies playing in Miskolc often visited Kosice. The first play in the Hungarian Language titled 'The Rattling Hat' premiered on 19, May, 1816 by a company from Miskolc. One of the actresses was Mrs. Déry Róza Széppataky.

From 1828 Kosice was the center form the Singing Association of Transylvania. In 1833 this company presented the play written by József Katona titled "Bánk bán" (Bánk Ban). One half of the company went to Budapest and continued to work in the Castle Theater in the same year. Later his group was the basis of the National Theatre opening in 1837.

Endre Latebár first stepped on stage in Kosice in 1858. Two years later, he was the manager of the theatre and remained until 1837. In the last two years as the manager four men of the Latabár family and two women were members of the company.

In 1899 a new building was inaugurated in Kosice. In 1914-1926 the manager Ödön Faragó tried to keep up the company. From 1920 Slovakian and Czech companies also visited the town. In 1924 the Slovak Theatre of Kossice opened playing in Slovakian. The Hungarian company was driven out of the main season.

In the WWs the companies of Géza Földessy and Zoltán Kőrössy played in town. In 1945-49 it became impossible for the Hungarian company to present plays. From 1952 the Hungarian Theatre Company of Komárom visited the town. In 1969 the Thália Theatre began to function as a branch of this company that became independent under the name of Thália Theatre with Péter Kolár as manager.

In 2002 Hungarian theatre life became wealthier with a new member, the Márai Studio Stage.
