Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was born in Switzerland and worked in Paris. The sculpture was a significant figure of the 20th century. He belonged to those, whose art greatly influenced the history of art as well as many Hungarian artists. His lean figure looks familiar even for those who do not remember his name. The Hungarians have only been able to see his statues and paintings in the form of reproductions up to now. This is why it is a pleasure to see his oeuvre displayed along the program of the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts in 2004.

The material of the exhibition was taken from the Alberto Giacometti Stiftung collection. The Alberto Giacometti Stiftung compilation is the largest of the works of the artist. It is displayed in five wards of the Kunsthaus in Zurich. Since the building is being renovated the show has to be removed. The exceptional occasion aroused on that account and this is why the material will be displayed in Budapest throughout this time.
We try to give a comprehensive picture of the oeuvre of the artist. The material is made up of almost seventy pictures. Many of his main works are shown such as the 'Tete qui regarde' made in 1928, the 'Cube made in 1933/34, 'La main' from 1947, the 'Le chariot' from 1950. The pieces of the series ' Women of Venice' from the 1950's and his portraits from the later periods of the artist. The gypsum works which are not transportable are presented by the photos taken by Ernst Scheidegger who followed the artist's art all his life. Beside the statues there are several paintings which are highly valued according to new studies. We also present some of the drawings of the artist, since he himself believed that drawing was the most important feature if his art. As there are only a few works from his beginning and late period in the original collection, we also borrowed artworks from other collections.
