Günther Uecker was one of the most influential figures of international art scene after WW II. who, with his nail pictures and his connection to the group ZERO, became well known at an early age. The focus of his art were the most severe issues of the world right from the beginning. He was interested in how the war with its terror could be dealt with, overcome, the issues of threat by humanity itself, the search for his own roots, the difficulties inherent in oral expression, faith in people's life, rituals, prayer, how society damages nature, facing catastrophes, leaving our marks here on Earth, the cyclical nature of our world and being and the linearity of time. There are only a few artists who has reflected on our age with such a consistency from the beginning of their career, as Günther Uecker did.
He kept an eye on the world around him throughout his oeuvre, but it did not satisfy him to be a just a bystander. He set up the model of active participation whereas he kept following ever new trends and artistic positions.
The exhibition is a review of the art of Günther Uecker in the past fifty years. This retrospect showing is one contiguous environment which demonstrate the variegation with which Günther Uecker expresses himself.
Günther Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf.
