The internationally acclaimed artist Margit Kovács was an outstanding figure of Hungarian sculpture and ceramic art in the 20th century. She bestowed the ceramics she owned to the Hungarian State in 1971 which were relocated in the museum named after her in Szentendre. The material was added her heritage after her death in1977. It was on display for over thirty years, until 2011 when the Pest County Museum Administration added a new wing to the museum building where a new, renewed exhibition was opened. The objective was to show the complete oeuvre of Margit Kovács in chronological order, focusing on her journey as an artist, from the beginning to the end.

The organizers wanted to be her, the person, in focus. She was a jolly woman, continuously reflecting on the world around her and touched clay, the material she worked with, with piety. The choice of the organizers’ in selecting and arranging the ceramics was to mirror this since most of the works on display used to ornament Margit Kovács' home. Her favourite items tell about her life and the studio which was also her home.

She was expert both in circle plastic craft and relieves, tiles with drawings carved in clay, turntable pottery and the fine shades of glaze on ceramics. Man was the centre of her work. Her themes were extremely variable: Biblical compositions, grotesque figures, genre pictures, silk song illustrations, densely ornamented jars and plates were all there. Her world, nevertheless, felt coherent. While her characteristic voice was rooted in Hungarian soil, she was still modern and European.

She worked tirelessly almost to the end of her life. She was in love with her craft. The material is my daily bread and sorrow. It became the element of my life for the first touch. Since then, the element was absorbed by my bloodstream, which drives me to the valleys of eternal hopelessness or the hills of joy - she said shortly before her death.

She managed to leave with a finished oeuvre behind. It is wonderful and complete, a fragile perfection in a nerve-breaking era.
