The exhibition on Sándor Márai that has visited 25 locations, mainly abroad, in the last 12 years, is to arrive at the Dobó István Castle Museum.
A permanent exhibition opened in Kosice to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Márai. After the renovation works on the Károlyi Palace were finished, the Petőfi Literary Museum showed an oeuvre exhibition on Márai which opened in November 2000. The material mainly consists of the heritage and documents owned by the museum. The latter has travelled Europe which showed us exactly how popular Márai was. The following town hosted the exhibition: Stuttgart, Munich, Berlin, Apenrade (Denmark), Warsaw, Milan, Hamburg, Salerno, Groningen, Bratislava, Kosice, London (twice), Essen, Sepsiszentgyörgy. Two years after the fisrt exhibition in London, the adaptation of the novel Embers was performed with success in the West End, starring Jeremy Irons. (The continuing success of the performance resulted in a chamber exhibition in the hall of the theatre.) It is nevertheless doubtless that it was the unceasing success of Márai that had the performance invited to London.
Today, the works of Sándor Márai are known all over the world: many of his writings have been published, still, Márai is still considered a ‘writer in hiding’. The 41 years he spent in immigration withheld generations of Hungarians to learn about his writings. The novel Embers has been published in over forty languages. The oeuvre exhibition at the Petőfi Literary Museum highlights the persona of the writer.
It also shows the complete oeuvre of Mára, mainly through items from the Petőfi Literary Museum collection. The various stages in his career are reflected on by excepts from his works.
