The population of Rátka settlement has been decreasing for decades now, and the culture and traditions of the area show a fading tendency as well.
That is why the Local Council decided in 1986 to buy and furnish a peasant cottage that was built in 1824. The house - because its coff style - is now declared a monument building. The purpose of buying the house was to show visitors the life style, customs and circumstances of the people of Rátka in the past. The purchase made it possible to preserve the objects and furnishing of the house, which will tell visitors about the traditions of the inhabitant.
In order to form a region house it was necessary to restore the original oven and renovate the roofing and the fence.
The inhabitants of Rátka accepted and supported the council's decision. They find a lot of old objects, furniture, clothing, pillows and pictures in the attic of their houses, which they brought down and shipped to the court of the region house. Even those who had nothing to bring, contributed to the work by repairing the items thus collected. The shoemaker, mason, tailor, clark and teacher worked together for the same pupose.
The necessary finances for the renovation works were met by the Local Council, the National Monument Protecting Authority and the inhabitants of Rátka.
The building gained back its original shape in 1990, and that is when it started operating as a region house.
The house gives home for a permanent exhibition that presents the traditional costume of our ancestors.
