The first museum in Komló was founded on 1st March 1954. Its main purpose at the time was to exhibit minerals, fossils and relics of the local coal mining. From the middle of the 1970'ies the museum set out to present the flora and fauna of the region, too. Up to 1990 the museum had changed names several times. In 1990 the Komló Collection of Natural Sciences was founded, whereas the collection of regional history further operated under the name of Regional Town Museum. Following the change of regime both museums were placed in the Main Square of the town.

A new collection of natural sciences was opened in 1997 under the title of The Natural Environment of Mecsek.
