Twenty years ago the borders were opened. The Iron Curtain
was lifted, and a dream came true for the peoples of Eastern
Europe. After the 1956 revolution and war of independence,
after the protracted decades of feeling shut out and shut in,
it was once again Hungary that dared to take the first step
towards freedom. From September 10 to November 9, 1989,
over sixty thousand citizens of the German Democratic
Republic (GDR) left the Eastern Zone via Hungary.
