József Galamb was born in Makó in 1881. He was interested in polytechnic, thus he studied in the Wood and Metal Industrial Secondary School from 1896, then in Industrial Collage in Budapest. He became, now we would call it, a graduate engineer. From 1901, he served in the navy of the Monarchy where he met Miklós Horthy, the man who later became governor.
After demobilizing, he lived in Hódmezővásárhely and worked for the Hungarian Automobile Firm. In 1903, he won a scholarship to Germany where he heard the news that a Car World Exhibition would take place in Saint Louis, USA. He first went to New York, then to Pittsburg to work. The Car World Exhibition influenced him so much that he decided to stay in the States.
In 1905, he began to work for Ford Company. His name and that of the company was interwoven with the Ford T Model. Its design began in 1907; the car was finished by 1, October 1908. It was a car easy to handle and the fancy price made it favorite among the people. Thus, the type was manufactured until 1927. The Fordson tractor designed by József Galamb was also very popular among farmers. Several catalogues show the different variations of the T model. We may also find a Russian description of the tractor.
Between 1911 and 1932, József Galamb visited Hungary several times. He operated several garages and storages of the Ford T model with his brothers. On his last journey home, he gave a lecture in the Hungarian Association of Engineers and Architects and screened a film of the Ford products. He died in Detroit at age 74 in 1955. He was the retired chief engineer of the largest car concern of the world.
The exhibition honors the life and work of József Galamb. We show objects originally used by him, family photos, notes, Ford catalogues and models.
