The BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year application is the biggest and the most prestigious in the world in wildlife photo category. Novák László is the first Hungarian to win the first prize in adult category. He received the first prize with his picture titled 'Appraisal of Plants' in 2005. The picture shows a plant, the Leucojum vernum, in water with a forest surrounding it mirrored in the water.
Novák László writes the following of taking the photo:
'In March 2005, nature got me into its grace, since it made me see the Leucojum vernum, a valued treasure of the area, in its grace. The plants grew in hundreds of thousands in the forest, surprising me greatly.
Originally, I wanted to just take a walk in the forest, so I took only the most necessary tools of photography, a panoramic zoom objective and a stand. Not all this would have been enough if I had not taken my wellingtons. I was like a stretched bow when searching for the best position to take the photo from. The wind was still, but I still had to keep my breath when pushing the button on the camera. Ever since then, it is my favorite picture.
Novák László received the third prize in 'Composition and Form' category with his picture of a flying chaffinch group. He took the photo in Slovenia, near the village of Mange, where 3-5 million of chaffinches gathered.
The results of Máté Bence at the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2005 application:
1. Eric Hosking Prize; For applicant sending in the highast standard series of six pictures.
2. The behavior of mammals category: Second prize
3. The behavior of birds category: Emphasized prizing
Máté Bence writes the following of his taking the photo titled 'Yawing Fox':
'Record amount of snow fell in Transylvania in 2005, which made finding food for animals extremely difficult. One of my friends called me to tell me that a fox had regularly visited a rest house and the tourists had fed it. A few weeks later, we traveled there. We left the car on 1000 meter high and walked up 600 meters with heavy loads. We did not see the fox for the next three days, but it came on the last day.'
