The Elizabeth Bridge was opened 50 years ago, on 21 November 1964. It was the last bridge that was rebuilt after it had been senselessly destroyed during the war. However, the new bridge had a different structure than its predecessor. In 1903, the Elizabeth Bridge opened as the world's largest free-span chain bridge. With its graceful lines, it belongs among the world's most beautiful bridges. The new bridge has a lighter structure suspension, which differs from its predecessor in its form.
The exhibition is a brief overview of the history Elizabeth Chain Bridge that was destroyed then rebuilt in 1903. It deals with the excavation of the wreckage parts, then the issue of the reconstruction of the bridge. Meanwhile we also present the interim Petőfi, "Betty" pontoon bridge.
The pageants and documents recall the debate that took place about the rebuilding of the old bridge or construction of a new bridges, the new bridge design process, and the building itself beginning with the dissembling of the bridge wreckage to the opening ceremony in 1964.
However, the story goes on, as our visitors can learn about the major repair works, renovation works and maintenance works on the bridge that has been done ever since.
The M 1: 200 scale model of the bridge is also on display, as well as a sample of the elementary cable(of which the wide main cables are 40 centimetres) and a portion of the old asphalt pavement that was removed in 1973
The exhibition is completed by a number of original documents and photographs.
The exhibition is open until 31 December 2014 at the Museum of Transport.
