In our exhibition we dispayed three hand-made gala towels. Two of them are from Tiszafüred and the third one was made in Nagyiván, in a village next to Tiszafüred.

The basic material for embroideries from Tiszafüred was handwoven homespun and basic material of the third textile was damask. All the motifs or patterns were sewn by young girls. Textiles from Tiszafüred were embroidered by Czékus Julianna, a young girl aged 11, who sewed the cherry-red motifs (conventional roses and feverfew) by the technique of ‘cross stitch’ embroidery. We can see the monogram of Czékus Julianna (‘C E’) above the decoration.

The third gala towel was a unique one as the decoration was made by different technique. The decoration was sewed with light-blue yarn. On the top of the towel the motifs were composed of five-branched flowers and roses and this decoration was sewed by a special stitch technique. The decoration ‘Jó regelt’ (Good Morning) above the flowers was also sewed by this technique.

On the bottom of the gala towel we can read ‘S. Juliska’ (=Smigróczki Julianna), the name of the young girl who had got this decorated towel from here sister, Smigróczki Veronika, in 1934.
