An unusual exhibition will be opened on the 12th of October at the Aquincum Museum. Museum researchers - including archaeologists and conservators - will put their favorite finds on exhibit. It has been over 15 years since the the Aquincum Museum has begun putting the most interesting and special finds from the recent excavations on show and there are others still hidden in the store rooms. There are even some pieces where the function has only recently been worked out by the archaeologists.
A selection of these pieces will go on display now. The main goal of this subjective exhibition is to bring archaeology closer to the public through the finds and personal experiences of our colleagues. This time, 35 archaeologists and conservators from the museum will exhibit their favorite artifacts together with personally colored descriptions to shed light, not only on the history of the object, but also to give visitors a glimpse behind the scenes at the museum to learn why and how a certain object can become a "favorite". The exhibition will also hopefully demonstrate that working in a museum is not a hobby to be played in an ivory tower, but an exciting job that requires patience, is sometimes hard and always value-creating.
Special finds on display include a Roman game board, an inscription of a palanquin-carrier, parts of a Roman wagon, a Roman chamber pot, a nozzle from a prehistoric furnace and a 5000-year old idol with a removable head. Several reconstruction drawings, portraits of the researchers with their favorite finds and a children’s corner will complete the exhibition.
