On 1 January 2002, the euro became the official currency in twelve European countries. In addition to the overall economic and commercial advantages of its use (e.g. the elimination of exchange costs, easier comparison of prices and a boost in trade), the euro has made the finances of everyday life much easier in many ways (during travel, when transferring money to another country, etc.).

Over the last few years the common European currency has become one of the strongest and most popular currencies in the world.

Hungary's accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004 means that the common European currency will also be introduced in Hungary in the future, provided that a number of conditions are met. These conditions, known as the "Maastricht criteria", are strict requirements which must be fulfilled to introduce the euro, as well as to ensure the stable and effective operation of the Hungarian economy.
