The common almond's (Amygdalus communis) provenance is Western Asia, although presently it is widespread all over in the submedterranian regions. In the Capathian basin the almond was brought by the ancient celtics.

The almond production was generally received from the 19th century in Hungary. The Carpathian Basin is the northern border of the almond geographical distribution, its biological conditions are founded in only few habitats. So famous Hungarian almond producing countrysides were developing during the last centuries e.g. Buda Mountains, North part of the Lake Balaton, and Pécs and Mecsek Hills.
Pécs and the surrounding of the town was famous almond producing place from the Turkish ages. It has been proved that poem of Janus Pannonius About an Transdanubian Almond tree was written in Pécs and inspired by the blossoming almond trees on the southern sides of the Mecsek Hills. We show our exhibitions in remembrance of the renaissance Hungarian poet Janus Pannonius.
Our exhibition is introducing the visitors into the biology of the common almond (Amygdalus communis), the history of almond producing, and cultivation on 18-19th centurian engraving copies and old horticultural books. Artistic pictures could be seen from the famous almond cultivating countrysides for example Tihany peninsula, where the almond trees were growing up altogether with lavenders. Today these old gardens became protected areas because they are harbouring lot of protected plant species e.g orchids.
