József Fehér was born on 28, October 1902 in Miskolc. After his years at school here he studied painting at the Collage of Fine Arts from Agost Benkhard among others. He worked a lot together with his master at the Colony of Artists in Miskolc. He was also member of the Arts Association of Miskolc founded in 1928.
Fehér regularly participated at exhibitions in Budapest. In 1930, his work was displayed at the Biennial of Venice. A one-man exhibition of his work opened in the Main Hall of the Mayor's Office of Miskolc the next year.
He left Hungary with his wife in 1938 and went to Mexico where he received citizenship as José Feher.
He began to make pottery giving him financial safety and fame He also appeared as a painter in October 1945 at the exhibition titled 'Modern Hungarian Painting' in Mexico City with Tihanyi Lajos and Jándi Dávid among others. His first independent exhibition was held in 1952 in the Galeria de Arte Mexicano. Later in 1960 he held a one-man exhibition there again. The exhibition showing his life-work was shown in 1970 in the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
His last significant display was held in Monterrey. He died in Mexico City on 5, December, 1988.
