Zoltán Bohus (1941- ) is a prominent personality of the international front rank, his oeuvre embodies cold glass. His sculpture made of glued layered glass presented at the Glass Symposium of Novy Bor in 1981 had the effect of a revelation: it was after his works of this sort that the similar treatment of glass began to appear internationally.

Tha basic characteristic of his activity is the thinking in space, his sculptures create different space situations; sometimes built up according to the laws of mathematics, geometry, sometimes constructed like architectural elements. Some series of him bring back ancient cultures and some search but also use and show the mysteriousness of light. During his activity he have used not only glass but also metal, some of his early works - Dinamic Equilibrum I-II. (1975) - were created as minimal art sculptures.
He established his individual symbolic system relatively early; his series - Spiral (1978-1982), Formula (1980-1982) - are the analyses of interior and exterior, and of the generating-undoing effect of light and space. With the rigorous utilisation of optical rules, he elevates his works into elegant frames of light. At the same time, his sculptures are architectures too - Architecture series (1987), Gate series (1991). Arranged to resemble a scenery, the interiors of his recent works - Gate series, Silver Stage series (1992) - are founded on the putting behind and juxtaposition of space, creating a certain timeless visual choreography. From the cold elegance of geometry he has arrived to warm spaces associating to phenomena of nature: Coincidence (1996), Aurora (1997), Aequilibrum (2001). The influental effect of these works of the artist is hidden in the smooth colour composition: the matted shades of browns and greens, also in using sophisticated basical forms. Cold and warm, strictly determined and spontaneous light can live in the same object-space: Stratosphere serie (2000). Some spaces of him are closed, timeless, activating for meditation according to their abstrakt, geometric, constructivist rules: To the Memory of the Holy Graal (2001).
His art seeks the verity, the illusionism, the expansion, and relativity of time and space, which is probably the most fundamental problem of the 20-21st centuries. Through his gates - and he opens more and more gate for us - we arrive to a transcendent, lyrical world and can feel, sometimes decode more of the mystery of glass symbols.
