Gábor Döbrentey was born in Szombathely. His studies at the Collage of Visual Art sin the period from 1928 to 1935 were supported by the town. He first showed in 1933.
He was mainly interested in by depicting people, though he also loved painting landscape, sometimes still-lives. What he loved most were large figural compositions. He found historic painting to express his interest by. His style can be characterised as a mixture of Nagybánya-style realistic post-impressionism and decorative representation. He was awarded with a number of prizes before WWII.
