It is little known that the first Local- and Settlement Museum of Budapest first opened in Óbuda in 1927 in an old boy-school under the name of Árpád Museum of Óbuda. Its collection perished in WWII, so the museum of today is not the heir or successor of the Árpád museum, it is only its spiritual heritage.

The museum took on its new name: The Museum of Óbuda in 1996. In 1973 on the 100th anniversary of the coalescence of Pest and Buda a marble tablette was revealed at the opening ceremony of the exhibition of local history. The functioning of the institution was provided by, first the community center, later the Circle of Associates of Óbuda.

In 1990-93 the museum was closed, and opened again after the renovation works were finished. The self Government of Békásmegyer became the supreme office of the museum in 1996.

Today the exhibition has multi-sided collections which were placed in one of the nicest buildings of the Capital in the 3rd district. The Museum of Óbuda is in the left wing of the Zichy Castle in 1 Fő Square; The Home Museum is in an old Baroque building from the 18th century in 4 Fő Square.
