The Straw Hat Museum of Kőrispatak opened on 21 July 2001. The idea of opening a museum showing straw hats came to a master straw hat maker whose family had been involved in this profession for three generations. By the 1990’s less straw hats were sold which meant the decay of this folk profession. By now only older people deal with stray hat making and the manufacturing of raw material.

By 1999 the idea turned into reality. The founder bought a 100-year-old peasant house in Kőrispatak that he reconstructed by 2001. He also established the Association of Straw Hat Makers in 2001.

Among others, the Straw Hat Museum organizes straw weaver and straw hat making camps. The camps can be attended by anyone independent of age and country.
