Lussonium is a Roman settlement situated on top of the height called Bottyán-sánc, once towering over the bed of the Danube, in the locality Dunakömlőd, today part of the town Paks. The archaeological site is known since the 19th century. Exploration has started in 1969, and is done systematically since 1987. Work done so far has permitted to establish the extension of the fortification in the late Roman period of Pannonia, as well as its structural system. The findings further indicate the existence of an earlier fenced auxiliary camp (vicus), used by the subsidiary troops. The length of the stone fortification (north-south) is 249 m, with a presently known width of 30-50 m.
So far was revealed the northern system of earthwork, and the foundations of the eastern one from the two bastions framing the entrance gate at the southern end of the fortification. At the inner side of the northern wall a line of buildings was found, each with southward oriented porticos, sustained by wooden columns, an edifice certainly used as military barracks. A few meters northward from the southern entrance gate the remnants of a tower extended over an area of 9 x 10 m were found. This edifice was erected in the late Roman times, when the fortified entrance gate was not more used.
Systematic exploration of the auxiliary vicus of Lussonium started in 1998. This work has so far revealed simple wooden and clay constructions, dated from the 1st Century A.D., as well as some stone buildings erected in the 3rd-4th Century A.D.
Exploration started in 1996 on a hill, west of the Bottyán-sánc, has revealed the traces of a settlement dating from the 3rd-4th Century A.D., - garbage deposits, water-collecting pool, a house with stone foundation and porticos - certainly part of the vicus settlement.
In course of the year 2003 the southern entrance gate, the barracks north of it, and the small fortification dating from the late Roman period were restores.
