The Museum of Pataj was established in 1959 by the history teacher Pastyik István who was the manager of the museum for the next 40 years. There were only a few objects in the collection at the beginning. Objects he collected were placed in one of the smaller rooms of the Primary School. However, a few month was enough and the room was too small for the collection.

Then, the manager singled out a peasant house with a barn. The institution bought it and renovated it after which it opened in the summer of 1962. The first visitors were the composer Kodály and his entourage.

The house and the barn was opened in 1968. The title of its permanent exhibition was Peasant House in Pataj int he 19th century. Later it was reorganized by Dr. K. Csilléry Klára and Sólymos Ede, as well as the manager of the Museum and peasant women. There is also a peasant house from Pataj in Szentendre at the Open-air museum.

Hundreds of objects arrived to the store of the museum. Party this fact and partly that the Unitarians were about to die out evoke the idea in the manager that the Unitarian church had to be saved as a museum building. In 1957, the Nation bough the building. The church was under reconstruction in the following seven years and was opened in 1982.

In the meantime, the manager also bought two neighbouring buildings, a smith workshop from the 19th century with the dwelling house belonging to it. These were built in 1804. The smith workshop will be furnished accordingly.

All four buildings are important for the townscape. Dunapataj used to be a market town for three and a half centuries. These buildings are memories of architecture of 200 years ago.

The old Unitarian church is the centre of museum life where we hold lectures and concerts. Rooms are attached to the naves where documents are shown.

Presently, the manager of the museum is Jelenleg Schill Tamás. In 2001 the Unitarian church was renovated again, thus it invites the visitors in complete splendour. The cassette structure of the ceiling of the church is unique in Hungary.
