The Munkácsy- and Kossuth Prize awarded painter and graphic artist was born in Gyulavári. At the Collage of Fine Arts from 1929 to 1930 his master was Glatz Oszkár. Afterwards, he traveled to Paris (1931-32) in Milan (1935) where he educated himself. In 1936 he settled in Hódmezővásárhely.
A taste of the exhibition
He was an extraordinary talent in Hungarian painting. In respect of his topics, he related to the realists of the Great Planes with social themes while he applied modern techniques. His represented deep emotions with heroic demand betraying a monumental thinker.

Though his talent was discovered early on, he was later unheeded. Most of his works were done in the last five years of his life. These are excellent examples of the questioning of the relation of three and two dimension composed dramatically.

He left 691 paintings and 2215 graphics to the town of Gyula. The material was the base of the museum established in 1978. Now it is part of the Corvin János Museum. The exhibition renewed every 4-5 years is open in the Pavilon building.

The objective of this chamber exhibition showing 8 pictures is to draw attention to the successor of Munkácsy Mihály and give a taste of the great art of Kohán György.
