I began taking pictures on the Eastern of 1991 on the Saint Hill. I kept on taking pictures of monks in their natural surroundings without a halt for 5 years. Slowly they got used to my presence in their everyday lives, which I became the witness of. Without really belonging to them I was able to take legitimate photos of them, their way of living.
Athos Mountain
My cell was in Karys, on the floor of Saint George of Calathas. This square shaped building reminded me of an old rest house. Blue vine grew on the backyard and a stone cistern was built here with water. My neighbors and roommates were Talea the grocery man, Father Daniel the tailor, and Nicos the building material transporter. I cut the wood to heat with in the old and bad stove, which was heating up the kellio. The rain was playing the drums on the roof and when the storm came I stuck the gaps with paper. I only had the light of candles and the kerosene lamps to light with. Calathas was full of cats, all the stairs and balconies were full of them. I developed my pictures in the laboratory, which we built together with Father Iostinos. We had a view on the Mountain Athos from this laboratory.

How much can somebody take in five years of a place that has a five thousand-year history behind? You leave the Mountain Athos the way you arrived: peacefully, humbly, and all alone. All you feel is that you are missing something from your bag and know that one day you will return to take more pictures.
