One of the most modern photography workshop of Szeged was opened in 1892 (Széchenyi square 2/a). The workshop is still standing in its original form in one of the inner courtyards of the square. By today the building has become an architectural and historical unicum. Besides the ones in Budapest and Szentes - Mai Manó Ház (Budapest); Fridrich Fényirda (Szentes) - this Szeged workshop represents the traditional atmosphere of the contemporary photography. Its appearence is unique and really valuable among the monuments of the town. The exhibition represents the work executed in the workshop in a period of 111 years.
The romance-like history of the workshop has two chapters. One of the two is all about the portrait taking industry (which functioned up to the 1950'-ies. Many photographers had worked in the workshop. Most part of the exhibition is set to represent this period through contemporary pictures, enteriour and equipments.
The second one is that of fine arts. When the last photographer left the MÁV immediately borrowed the building from the town in order to run a fine art club there. This club is still functioning today. We also commemorate some part of the exhibition to this chapter, because - for instance - the drawing club members were the ones who prevented the building from being used and rebuilt according to commercial purposes. Ferenc Pataki was the one who asked the former students of the workshop to exhibit their items and talk about the past of the fine art workshop.
The exhibition was arranged by the Móra Ferenc Museum, but we are also to mention the sacrifices and support given by the Szeged Art Foundation, without which this exhibition could have not been opened.
