Dr. Dénes Balázs (1924-1997) was a Hungarian scientist, blessed with extraordinary willpower on the scene of geography. His role model was Sándor Kőrösi Csoma. His career began with his researches limestone areas and caves in the Aggtelek karst region. He initiated the exploration of the cave Liberty in Égerszög.
Later on, he did field studies in about 130 countries on five continents for three decades. He was a lonely traveller, backpacking. As the result of his trips, he published 27 books, hundreds of scientific papers and popular science articles. His books were translated into five languages, selling millions of copies. He paid significant attention to the preservation of natural resources, he spoke out on the preservation of geological treasures in several articles.
He played the role of in science organization in the Hungarian Speleological group and the Hungarian Geographical Society. He finally had the Hungarian Geographical Museum opened after years of dedicated work in 1983, the only public collection in the town of Érd.
Dénes Balázs was honoured a number of times for his professional activities. The six-language-speaking geographer's intellectual heritage is highly appreciated in the scientific community around the world.
About the exhibition
Dénes Balázs during his travels made outstanding achievements in studying karst regions, deserts, jungles, world of ice and volcanoes. However, he could only write a synthesizing work on forests and deserts. Even though he prepared drafts for the other books too, however, these volumes cannot be published. Our goal is to have the former dream of Dénes Balázs come true in the form of an exhibition.
The exhibition is a "three-dimensional manual", the thematic unity of which is not only home for geography fiends home, but everyone regardless of age and geography education, shortly, all those born curious and open minded.
One unit deals with the local patriot, the founder of the museum', who did so much to preserve the values to make geological characteristics public domain.
The exhibition is in English and Hungarian providing an opportunity for international visitors to get to know about Dénes Balázs.
