Csók István, famous people, fine art, painting, temporary exhibition

István Csók was born on 13 February, in Sáregres, Fejér County. Like so many of his colleagues, he also began his art education at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest; however, his life's work was fulfilled due to the time he spent in Munich and Paris. During his long artistic career, he accumulated success after success both in the domestic and international scene: his works won numerous awards both in Hungary and abroad. His main works were acquire by public collections in his life became; the famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence invited him to paint his self-portrait.

His works were regularly featured in national exhibitions; he repeatedly successful showed at the Venice Biennial and world expos. In 1920 the Szinyei Merse Pál Association elected him president. In the early twenties he filled the position of the rector for the College of Fine Arts. To honour the old artist, a street and an art gallery was named after him in Székesfehérvár. One of the most important Hungarian artists of the 20th century, the painter of life died at the age of 96, in Budapest on 1 February 1961.

The memorial exhibition on the 150th anniversary of his birth is tribute to István Csók's achievement as a painter. The material of 60 works of art is only a slice of the immense oeuvre of nearly eight decades of István Csók. The compilation is organized around five thematic units: studio representations and within that especially the nudes; folk genre pictures; paintings portraying eastern objects; paintings presenting the ideal home; as well as landscapes depicting lake Balaton, the Venice Lido and the idyllic garden. It is little-known art historical data that as was the artistic fashion of his times, István Csók was happy to surround himself with eastern and folk objects. Items from this collections are shown this way so that the paintings of the connected to them and the items are placed them side by side. Some personal objects and furniture of Csók as well as some photos of his life are featured in the next unit. Several of his works are featured in public collections' permanent exhibitions. Many of these are on display at our exhibition. Works that there were hidden treasures in private collections for decades, such as Züzü in front of the Mirror, or the Sokače Girls with an aged woman will be on display.
