The years 1870 came with significant changes in Hungarian painting, especially landscape painting. Artists working in Barbizon's artist colony in France introduced and naturalized landscape painting in the open air , which significantly changed the themes used in the genre, and also painting practice.

They turned against the strict academic rules and instead of paining specified topics they painted what they saw in everyday life. They tried to paint the atmospheric phenomena observed in nature, that is, plein-air style become general, which focused on changes caused by light and air.

The exhibition presents the works of Hungarian artists who joined this new trend. The works of art by the most famous Hungarian artists of the era 1870-1915 will be presented at a location where this period was of paramount importance. The Gödöllő Castle at that time was a popular resting place for the royal family, which also meant the second golden age in the history of the castle. Our exhibition provide insight into works by Hungarian artists from the end and beginning of the century.
