The 1944-45siege of Budapest was one of the bloodiest sieges during World War II. It was for the first time in the history of the Hungarian capital that the whole city became a battleground.

I District IX. the devastation was immense, almost all of the major factories and plants were destroyed, 4716 houses were damaged and 556 apartments were completely destroyed. It is almost impossible to estimate how many people were left homeless.

A lot of citizens wanted to take photos of how life restarted, ruins were cleared and bridges were restored. An almost countless number of photos were taken of Buda and Pest, of the the devastation and reconstruction following the removal of ruins. The exhibition selects of these photos in addition to archival newsreel from the time of the siege.
