The show basically involves two major thematic units built around the Javanese Wayang tradition, mediated by items typical of West Java , as well as works of art by József Gaal that were inspired by just these puppets. The Javanese Wayang have archaic traditions, bound by strict rules, but also very flexible genre that usually conveys the values of Islam. It is in continuous interaction with the outside world, open to the novelty, and perhaps due to this is it is a living and the popular tradition in Indonesia today. The world of forms in the art of József Gaal its archaic symbolism can well be related to the world of Wayang. Contemporary approach , creative reflection updates and expands the heritage of a distant and traditional culture and its range of perspective. By the differences and similarities new contexts and dialogues may occur , and the purpose of the exhibition is also to offer fresh perspectives on the Indonesian island of world art. through contemporary Hungarian interpretation.

Thus, tradition is conveyed by carved wood from the West Java collection of Ernő Zboray and colourfully painted Wayang puppets. In the works of József Gaal this Javanese art form is reformulated by means of contemporary art. In the focus of art cycles, just like Wayang games according to traditional Javanese interpretation and the performances of stories, is the conflict of human existence. Therefore, the exhibition reveals new and exciting layers of interpretation to understanding the visual art of a distant culture.
