The painter and teacher Imre Kocsis does not represent any of the isms. His oeuvre of fifty years is outstandingly variable. It includes contemporary art from various art periods, their trends and his art related experiments. His art is, however, not really known by the public in large. He is an artist in love with experimenting but working slowly. There are no thousands of works in his oeuvre, still, his contemporaries often see him as one who paved the way for generations at the Academy of Arts.

Kocsis’ place and significance on Hungarian art scene is determined by many factors. At the beginning of his career, he was involved in realism. From the 70s he worked in hyperrealism, but towards the end of the decade, through the 80s, he represents various graphic methods (sieve printing, cianotipia, etc).

Some of his recurring themes and symbols appeared in the 80s, eg. Scythe Series, or the key hole motif. He keeps on experimenting with applying various photography methods and a graphic expression.

In the 90s, he focused all his energy and experiences on the great work of art Wedding in which realism and hyperrealism, various impressionist ideas, compact message was mixed with quality material.

In the new millennia, he continues art in his individual expression he began with Wedding. His themes and topics are often his family, his environment.

He basically worked on only one work from 1991 to 2000: Wedding (3 x 4,5 m), it is the summery of his career so far.

He taught at the Academy of Arts for over four decades. Later on, as the head of the department he trained hundreds of students. Professor Imre Kocsis retired from the Department of Picture Graphics.

The Kogart exhibition of the Kocsis Oeuvre is basically the first experiment to show his works of over fifty years. The material on display consists of 100 works of art, the earliest of them is from 1956, and a many that were kept in bottom drawers up to now.

As Imre Kocsis is also an acknowledged landscape artist and collector of butterflies, we also show some of these interests in the showcases. The reason is that these often serve as inspiration to his expression of art.
