The competition announced by World Press Photo this year set new records: the number of competitors from 128 countries was 5847 while the number of works competing was 101.960. '... When the jury saw the number of works that competed, 101.960, they knew exactly that we are able to take only a fragment of pain all around the world. The intensity of the drama almost paralyses us with its visuality it reoccurred so many times... The selection is not an inventory about events in the world but a visual journey…' - Ayperi Karabuda Ecer, the president of the jury.

The World Press Photo exhibition, just like in former years, mirror the last year. The history of the era we live in, daily life, politics, sport, art, changes in nature, scientific achievements and those who we see in the news emerge in a compact form. The exhibition with the 167 photos is an exciting experience for all those who are keen on learning what is going on around us in the world.

The international jury spent 13 days in Amsterdam, forming opinion of the 101.960 competing photos. The jury was made up of 63 photographers from 23 countries. The photos they selected now are shown in the course of a travelling exhibition. The year book with the awarded photos is to be published in six languages. The most outstanding photos in every year are published as exhibition catalogues but are also fascinating documents.

World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organization founded in Holland in 1955. Their objective was to facilitate and popularize professional photographers across the world. They grew to be an independent studio of press photography and swapping of information. To do so, World Press Photo organizes the largest and most influential photo competitions on a yearly basis. The awarded photos are shown in the course of travelling exhibitions, showing in 45 countries, 100 locations across the world. The exhibitions are visited 2.5 million people each year. The year book with the awarded photos is to be published in six languages.

The events announced by the World Press Photo also include several educational programs. They organize seminars and workshops for photographers, photo agencies and editors in developing countries. The master course Joop Swart in Holland supports talented photographers at the beginning of their career. The course offers practical advice and professional help by the most illustrious representatives of press photo.
