Sokac Region House - Kásád
Sokac Region House
Address: 7827, Kásád Rákóczi Ferenc utca 28.
Opening hours: Continuous
The Sokac Region House faithfully presents the way of living and the folk art of the Sokac living along the river Dráva.

The Sokac are a minor group of Croatians. The two largest groups are the so-called village Sokac and the Sokac living in or around Mohács. The Sokac settlements around the Dráva are: Alsószentmárton, Kásád, and Siklósand Beremed. In the 1960's the Sokac slowly moved in from Siklós to Alsószentmárton.

Kásád (Baranya County) is the furthermost south village of Hungary. Its population was made up of only Sokac at the first half of the 19th century. They mainly were involved in farming and animal husbandry. Their characteristic textiles are beautiful and valuable.

The Sokac Region House in Kásád is a long house. The walls are made of loam and the roof is hatched. The basis is divided into three parts: there is a kitchen with the furnace in, the living room, and the chamber. The pigsty on legs made of wood, a typical element of the area, is in the backyard. The granary was also made of wood, but was painted. Besides these a so-called 'hombár', which was a type of granary and a shadoof are in the backyard.

The complete furnishing of the building is shown: the living room with the bed made, the corner bench, typical equipment s used in the kitchen, and the preserving tools made locally are shown in the chamber. The other rooms of the building, which also faithfully present the characteristic life of the area can also be visited.
