In the historical center of Tapolca visitors are attracted from the buildings around the lakes Malom and Kis toward the building of the first school of the town.

The first written document about the school dates back to 1550l. During the Turkish occupation the town was disroyed and we can only here of the school again in the first half of the 18th century, after the resettlement. In 1733 the school building was found in its current place. According to denominational documents from the times between 1745 and 1778, the building was built of stones and covered by thached roof. One of its rooms and the kitchen were inhabited by the headmaser and his family, and the other room was used as a classroom.

The building was reconstructed in 1813. Students were taught here till 1884. After that time it was exclusevily served as a dwelling place for the choir-master (that is where the name: Choir-master house originates from).

Undoubtedly the building has been going through innumerable reconstructions, even so the school of Tapolca today is one of the most significant buildings that have so many years of history and that still keep their original form. This is the reason why the Town Council renovated the building in 1979-80. The authorities of the County museum established the center of the collection and exhibition of the pedagogy history relics of Veszprém county.

During the Middle Ages there had been school education in the town. The first school was possibly built on the Church hill. In the 14th and 15th centuries several Tapolcan students got in to the European universities. continue
