Nagyvázsony is located in the centre of the valley named after it, at the bottom of Kab Hill, along the road from Tapolca to Veszprém. It is about 27 km from Tapolca and 20 from Veszprém.

Nagyvázsony was named for its first owner, the Vázsony genus with the first well-known member Ákos, the lord lieutenant, later the court judge of the Queen. After the Vázsny family died out, the property with the castle in Vázsonykő came back on the king who donated it to Pál Kinizsi in 1472. The castle of Vázsonykő was probably built towards the end of the 14th, the beginning of the 15th century.

Kinizsi owned the castle for 22 years. These years were the most outstanding in the existence of the castle and its surroundings. The large scale construction works ordered by the lord resulted in significant boom. The rebuilt castle, the Paulite monastery and the parish church in the village are proof of this.

The quadrangle shaped tower bares characteristics of the middle ages. It is one of the oldest Gothic towers in the Transdanubian area. With its five stories, it was rather safe than comfortable for its tenants.

Originally, the tower was 25 m height. The 10-12 quadrangle shaped tower is now 30 m. The walls are 2-2.5 m wide and are gradually narrowing towards the top. They are just about 1 m on the top.

The "U" shaped tower gate is the strongest spot in the castle. The defenders could shoot at the enemy through gaps on the eastern and northern walls. A walking passage leads along the loopholes on floor one. It is covered with shingle.

4-5 m wide corridors surround the rooms to defend them. Loopholes were cut in the walls. The fountain that supplied water in the past and still does it nowadays is located in the moat.

The tower has five floors. Once it was covered with shingle roof. Through loopholes in the walls, the visitors can view the beautiful environment. The top terrace was built on the tower later.
