The Gizella chapel is one of the most precious monuments of Veszprém, built at the order of Bishop Robertus, who was of Walloon origin. The 13th century frescoes of the most ancient Hungarian private chapel of the bishop or the king are among the oldest frescoes in Hungary. The keystones of the arches are also unique. The building bears characteristics of the early Gothic style. The frescoes, which depict the apostles, are from the same period as the construction of the chapel, and they indicate Byzantine influence. Of the upper chapel, only the northern wall, with buttresses supporting the vaults, and the arches with 11 small figures of dragons above them survive. The lower chapel is comparable to the some of the finest religious art of the late Árpád Era. It is particularly interesting in part because it was one of the first sites of monument reconstruction in Hungary.
