Györköny is in Tolna County, Hungary, close to the Danube. The settlement is in a valley; its ground is excellent for agricultural works. It has been a populated location since ancient times. The first written document is a tax list of the Vatican from the 13th century.

The settlement was often destroyed, the biggest destruction occurred in the 16th century under the Turkish reign. The property owners took foreign workers in to fulfill the emptied spaces. János Meszlény provided excellent conditions for the foreign workers: the grape was tax free for seven years, every family could build a house of their own, and create their own wine growing territory.

The first German settlers arrived in 1718 from Burgenland. They were the so-called "Heidebauer". The second wave of settlers began arriving from 1722 from Hessen County. The typical family names were Bősz, Gangéi, Hutflesz, Köhler, Krausz, Krámer, Koch, Lamm, Pámer, Remler, Schmidt, and Walter. Even though the settlers came in different times and different places, they were all Evangelists. Off course, their language was not unified. Their common dialect developed through a period, which is still in use today.

The settlement is agricultural. The viniculture had great importance from the beginning, since both times the settlers came from a wine country. Györköny developed a lot through the centuries. In 1722, the number of its population was 246 in 40 houses. In 1820, the number was 1591. By 1940, it reached the 2500. After WWII, the number of the population decreased to 1100 in consequence of relocation and urbanization.

New houses were built or the old ones were reconstructed. There are 490 houses in Györköny today and 310 presses were built. About 60% of the population is the descendant of the settlers. 40 % are the Hungarians who arrived after WWII. To preserve tradition a house with reed roof was converted into museum.
