Lajos Kunffy was an important figure of Hungarian painting in the first half of the 20th century. His artistic aim, just like that of the painters who belonged to the Nagybánya circle, the plein-air, was to find the beauty of light and spectacle full of air.
The most important stages of his art were Kaposvár, Munich, Paris, Somogytúr, and Budapest before he returned to Somogytúr. Kunffy was an exhibitor of the Salon of Paris in the first decade of the 20th century. He traveled to Madrid, Taormina, and Tunis to find the right coloring for his pictures, but he found the elucidation in Somogytúr
The Lajos Kunffy Museum of Somogytúr is made up of two buildings: his old home and a noble cottage from the 18th century with a studio with a white tympanum reminding of a Greek temple. The buildings are surrounded with a pleasant park.
The land of 1000 acres belonged to Kunffy for forty years. The land contained 30 acres of vineyard, a 20-acre fishery, and a fruit farm with excellent apple trees. He was also involved in animal husbandry. The combination of art and farming was unique in Hungary. The exhibited paintings of Kunffy give a unique experience of almost half a century of farming.
