The Spectacle Collection of the Local History Collection of Kőbánya formed out of necessity since the lighting, the humidity and the soaked walls of the 60 m2 room made us seriously think how to organize the objects. Off course we wanted the exhibition to show and salutes the characteristics of Kőbánya the localism that is present for half a century.

Our aim is to show the real historic values of our district always mirrored the progressive development of the country with its geographic characteristics, geologic conditions, agriculture, stone mining, as well as its brick, provision-, porcelain-, tool- and electronics industry. The few hundred year old trees in Népliget, the Colony of Artists on Százados Street, the development of the market-town, the largest cemetery of Middle Europe, the Planetarium, the Firemen Museum, the civic drama circles, the traditions of ecclesiastic and worldly choruses are shown by the collection.

The most interesting spectacles are the Úrikaszinó (The Casino of Gentlemen), the buildings in Cserkesz Street, the grates of the old houses, the beautiful smith works and an edifice built in the Italian style with ornamentation, two puttos and two pillars.

The retailers and artisans played an important role in the everyday life. We can mention the name of the shoemaker Gusztáv Mihály (1894-1981) who began to work in the 1930's and worked for the next fifty years. His studio and tools are the most authentic collection of objects. We also show the equipments of hat makers, barbers and confectioners. The flat of workers in Ceglédi and Bihari Street were small, but the objects of their clean kitchens recall the sad reality of the period between WWI and WWII. The pipes show a richer lifestyle.

The first brick factory was founded in 1838 in Kőbánya since the flood ruined many buildings and there was a need of building material. By 1873 there were 11 brick and tile factories in the area. Later the factory had more products: tile, industrial porcelain and silverware. After WW, some factories were closed while others specialized on certain products. Our collection of over 1500 bricks is the third largest in the country.

The Bear House Association of Kőbánya was founded in 1850, the Dreher Beer Factory in 1862 to which Henrik Haggenmacher joined in 1812. The bear factories of Kőbánya were the largest in Hungary. The old bottles recall the heydays of beer making.

The Spectacle collection focuses on the pharmaceutical industry, wineries, pork trade, textile industry and the vehicle industry. The models made by the local historian József Tóth immortalized the old buildings of Kőbánya of which some are already taken down. Some characteristic objects recall the atmosphere of the turn of the century. Some carvings did not only ornament the buildings but were significant as artworks as well. The old radios, televisions, record players may conjure up nostalgic feelings.

The importance of summoning of the surroundings is realized by the glazed signboard of Dr. Ede Müller, the first MD of Kőbánya as well as the pieces of the Zsolnay Stove.
