It is worth taking a walk a bit further away from the city to the Ethnographic Museum, which is in the so-called Lenk villa at Deák square, near an attractive park. The villa was built by Austrian architect Ottó Hoffer for the Lenk wine-seller family in 1890. In 1913 the building was donated to the museum.
This served as the main building of the musum up to 1987. Several exhibitions were held here. Today the whole building is the home of a gigantic ethnographic exhibition. The collection involves objects from the former Sopron county. The exhibited items represent the formation of the material culture of the county town-town-village.
At present we exhibit 23 different profession. In eight rooms of the ground floor we present various branches of the clothing industry (workshops, tools, products). The embroydery of Hövej closes this part of the collection. Visitors can see very soft table cloths and other materials, the values of which were equivalent with 600-800 kgs of wheat.
In the basement we exhibit works made of wood, metal and stone. Fortunately we managed to purchase whole workshops of carpentry, turnery, wheelwright, stone-cutter, locksmiths and smithery. Visitors can see a furnished wine-cellar, a pub from Harka and a dry mill originated from Csapod.
